15 minutes of fame
With my position at work, I am allotted 15 minutes for my morning break. It is asked that I do not extend my break over the 15 minute grace period. The sign in and out process is recorded. I’m fine with all of this.
Today’s 15 minute break…
I ran down the five flights versus taking the elevator. It does not save much time but I feel much better as I am much more alive when I am flying down the stairs. The exit puts me right onto the downtown sidewalk. From here I walked with the current. I passed a fellow colleague as I was pulled towards a church about a block and a half away. As I took my brisk and significant steps towards the landmark, a noticeable lineup of individuals flowed from the church front doors. My guess would be that it is a food bank and the patrons were waiting for their portions. I continued to gravitate towards the line and then I walked by.
I took the first left following the church and another left soon after. Now I was heading back towards my work. Being in the moment gave me the desire to say my cordial “hellos” as I passed others on the sidewalk.
While approaching my final left turn, I walked right into an interview on the street corner. A local TV station asked me about the fake and mysterious winter we have been having. “We had such a heavy and chaotic winter last year that I feel at ease with this year’s lack of a Canadian winter. Not worried. I am enjoying the gift,” was my response.
My pace picked up upon reentering the concrete building. I, again, passed the same colleague that I had passed MINUTES earlier. “Today is the day, Darren,” my spirit exclaimed, “today is the day!” Without knowing what I was talking about, he felt the words.
I made my way on to the elevator with an older woman who also works on my floor. She was just as excited about her allotted grace period as I was. We shared about the exciting upcoming long weekend and both felt the energy about that.
On the way to my cubicle I was told I had 2 minutes to spare. I asked the coworker what she was going to do with her remaining two minutes.
And now I am back at my desk.
The power of the moment. Freedom.
